The fast is established in honor of two great feasts:
-
The Transfiguration of the Lord (Preobrazhenie Gospodovo) on August 19
-
The Dormition of the Mother of God (Uspenie Bogorodichno) on August 28
Fasting Rules during the Virgin’s Fast
-
Monday to Friday – strict fast without oil.
-
Saturday and Sunday – oil is permitted.
-
August 19 – The Feast of the Transfiguration – fish, oil, and wine are allowed.
Grapes and Figs Tradition
Before the start of the fast and until the Feast of the Transfiguration, grapes and figs are not eaten. According to tradition, these fruits are blessed in church on August 19, and only then are they consumed. This blessing symbolizes the offering of the first fruits to God in gratitude for the harvest.
Spiritual Meaning
The Virgin’s Fast is a time of prayer, humility, and preparation for one of the most important Marian feasts. It is believed that by observing the fast with sincerity, believers not only cleanse their bodies but also strengthen their faith and deepen their connection to God and the Holy Mother.
Whether you strictly follow the fasting rules or simply reflect on its meaning, this period invites you to slow down, live mindfully, and embrace gratitude for the blessings of life.
