This recipe is old, also from my grandmother who lives in Lerin, Aegean Macedonia. They traditionally prepare gurabii around Christmas.

Gurabii are quite easy to prepare, they don'r require much ingredients.

  • 1/2 kg lard
  • 1 egg
  • 2/3 cup powdered sugar (cup size 200 ml)
  • 1 kg flour
  • 1 sachet vanilla sugar (10 g)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 100-150 g chopped almonds
  • powdered sugar for dipping


  1. Mix all ingredients and knead dough. Dough should be hard.
  2. You can make them with hand, take from the dough and form small balls or roll out a crust and cut out forms. Align them on baking paper and bake at 180 C degrees for about 15 minutes or until slightly browned.
  3. Baked cookies are dipped into powdered sugar. Repeat the dipping if you want whiter cookies.
