Mint in Macedonia is not something rare or hard to grow. It grows almost everywhere.
You can find it on the mountains, near water, along paths, and very often in people’s yards. In my case, in Gopesh, it just grows in my yard without much effort. I don’t treat it as a crop. It’s just there, and I use it when I need it.
Mint grows easily because the conditions suit it well. The climate and soil allow it to spread without much care.
it grows wild and fast
it doesn’t need special attention
it comes back every year
it has a strong, clean smell
It’s not something produced on a large scale. It’s mostly used at home or collected from nature.
Fresh mint is usually picked when needed. A few leaves are enough for tea or for adding a light flavor to food.
If there is extra, it can be tied in small bunches and left to dry naturally in a shaded and airy place. That way it can be used later, especially for tea.
In Macedonian homes, mint is commonly used for:
tea
fresh drinks
light seasoning
basic home remedies
Mint is known for helping digestion and giving a fresh taste. People use it mostly because it’s available and easy to use.
