DALGONA SUGAR CANDY (SQUID GAME)

Squid Game, is an amazing (if not terrifying) South Korean series that has become popular overnight in all parts of the world. The show has many fans in Macedonia too. Perhaps one of the most famous episodes (out of 9) is episode 2, when contestants struggle to cut out shapes made of crunchy sugar, known as Dalgona.

Dalgona candies are made in many Korean cities and sold on the streets and are very popular among children. The preparation is very simple and you will only need a few minutes to prepare the candy. You need sugar and baking soda (or baking powder).

Ingredients for 1 candy:

  • 2 tbs sugar (you can use brown sugar too)
  • a pinch of baking soda or baking powder
  • a piece of parchment paper and a cookie mold with desired shape

Preparation:

  1. Melt the sugar until amber color (stirring to avoid crystallization), then add a little (a pinch) of baking soda. Be careful not to burn the sugar because it will get a bitter flavor.

  2. The soda reacts with the hot sugar and makes small bubbles with air to form a crunchy, beautiful candy.
  3. Pour the hot sugar on baking paper.

  4. Press the desired shape on top after 20 seconds.

  5. The candy should not be separated from the rest of the sugar, but should remain on the piece. You can use a toothpick to remove the form later.
  6. Leave to cool down completely.
